Moving to South Carolina

Charleston

Whether you’re moving across the state or within the same area, there are many notable destinations to live. If you have some room in your budget, consider living in the heart of the low country region, Charleston. This destination hotspot has the largest population and is the oldest city in the state. It’s history exudes charm, with residents living in pastel antebellum homes, on cobblestone streets and footsteps away from church steeples. Mount Pleasant, the state’s third-largest city, features the iconic Ravenel Bridge which overlooks Cooper River. The Charleston metropolitan area also is home to many beaches like Johns Island, Sullivan’s Island,  Isle of Palms and Folly Beach.

Greenville

On the opposite end of the Palmetto State sits Greenville, located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The largest city in the upstate area has seen its downtown revitalized as the bustling city is fueled by major corporations like GE Power and Michelin. Just outside Greenville, Five Forks ranks among the better cities to live because of its low crime rate, thriving economy and great schools. Cities like Mauldin, Simpsonville and Clemson also are among notable cities because of their small-town vibes and recreational outdoor activities while still being close to the action.

Columbia

Columbia, the state’s capital, will always be home to many with its downtown nightlife and steady economy and many attractions. The second largest city in the state offers many historic monuments, a plethora of higher education options and Fort Jackson, the United States Army’s largest installation for basic combat training. Near Columbia, Forest Acres offers great schools and parks. Lexington and Irmo haven’t slowed down in population because of their low crime rates, great schools and both surround Lake Murray, which offers about 650 miles of shoreline.

Myrtle Beach

Recognized globally as a vacation hot spot, Myrtle Beach also can be a home paradise. Also seen as the golf capital of the world, the city attracts many with its high tourism and hospitality industry. Just outside the Charlotte, North Carolina border sits cities like Tega Cay and Fort Mill. The former is a small-town that features a close knit, lakeside community while Fort Mill offers affordability and great schools. Whether you’re in the low country, midlands, upstate or anywhere in between, the Mobile Attic offers moving and storage solutions to all of South Carolina. Things to Do

Each year, the Palmetto State offers hundreds of festivals and events across the state. Arguably the most prominent is the South Carolina State Fair. Normally held in mid-October in Columbia, the week and a half festival is a treat for all. With thrilling rides, unique games, animal exhibits and mouth watering delights, thousands pack the annual event. Among other fairs across the state are the Western Carolina State Fair in Aiken, Simpsonville’s Fair at Heritage ParkOrangeburg County Fair and the Coastal Carolina Fair in Ladson.

South Carolinians cannot miss Charleston’s Lowcountry Oyster Festival, a one-day event in January that is deemed the world’s largest oyster fest with over 80,000 oysters consumed. The area also offers the largest wildlife and sporting event in the country at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition. For equestrian enthusiasts, the Aiken Horse Show is still standing after more than a century while the Carolina Cup in Camden has seen thousands gallop to its stands for decades.

Residents who love to move to the beat can dance the official state dance, The Carolina Shag, at the annual National Shag Dance Championships in Myrtle Beach. If you prefer to watch instead, visit the Spoleto Festival USA, a cultural gathering that mirrors the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, and has brought internationally recognized artists and performers into the heart of Charleston since 1977. Performers and spectators race to Darlington for a different reason, the Southern 500 NASCAR Cup race at Darlington Raceway. Since 1950, the NASCAR weekend event draws thousands from across the world to watch drivers face the track known as “Too Tough To Tame.”

Places to Visit

The Lowcountry

Once you’re done unloading your Mobile Attic and are nestled into your South Carolina home, now the exploration begins. Before you start your journey, go back in time and visit Fort Sumter. This historic battleground helped mark the beginning of the Civil War on April 12, 1861. After decades of growing strife between North and South, Confederate artillery opened fire on this Federal fort in the Charleston Harbor. Take a boat tour and learn more about Fort Sumter’s role in the bloodiest battle in American history.

While in the low country, make sure to visit one of the oldest plantations in the South, the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. It offers one of the country’s most beautiful gardens, a house tour, train and boat rides and zoo and nature center. Middleton Place is known as America’s oldest landscaped gardens while Rainbow Row features pastel-colored Georgian homes that have their own story to tell. Chucktown also offers the South Carolina Aquarium, home to more 4,500 animals and one of the two aquariums the state offers.

The other aquarium, Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach, is one of the many attractions located on Broadway at the Beach. Make sure to visit the SkyWheel, a Ferris wheel that soars over 20 stories above the Atlantic Ocean. You can also feed alligators at Alligator Adventure, see your favorite celebrity at the Hollywood Wax Museum and more while at the beach. Although Myrtle Beach is a destination hotspot, find time to plan a visit to other bodies of water the state offers. Plan to ride bicycles in Hilton Head Island on Coligny Beach Park, put your feet in the sand at Isle of Palms or rent a cabin at Lake Jocassee.

Columbia Area

In Columbia, Lake Murray is the jewel of the area for vacationing, fishing, boating and more. You also should join thousands and visit the Riverbanks Zoo & Botanical Garden. It is home for more than 2,000 animals and has one of the country’s most beautiful gardens. The capital city also is home to the largest museum in the state, the South Carolina State MuseumIt boosts four floors of ever-changing exhibits, a digital dome planetarium and 4D interactive theater while showing residents and guests of the state our art, science and technology and history.

Explore

Choosing the Mobile Attic for your moving and storage needs gives you more time to see what the Palmetto State has to offer. Along with its flagship campus in Columbia, USC offers seven other campuses throughout the state. Founded in 1770, the College of Charleston sits in the heart of the city and is the oldest college in the state and 13th oldest institution of higher learning in the country. Furman University and Wofford College in the upstate are among notable schools in South Carolina while The Citadel in Charleston is nationally recognized as a premier military college. The state also is home to eight historically black colleges and universities.

The Mobile Attic offers convenient storage solutions for incoming freshman, seasoned seniors and all students in between. If you’re living in a dorm with roommates extra space can be hard to find. That’s why we offer portable storage units that we can deliver to your college or university.
