Discover Columbia, SC

Columbia was created by the state’s general assembly in 1786 and chartered as a city in 1854. Also known as Soda City among other nicknames, Columbia is more than just South Carolina’s capital. The second largest city in the state boosts the flagship university in South Carolina and the South Carolina State House. Columbia, which is the first city named after renowned explorer Christopher Columbus, also is home to many military personnel with Fort Jackson and McEntire Joint National Guard Base. Fort Jackson is the largest United States Army installation for Basic Combat Training while the latter is a training base for the state’s air national guard.

Columbia is known for its history, the Saluda and Congaree rivers and places to visit like the Riverbanks Zoo & Botanical Garden and Sesquicentennial State Park. Moving to Columbia, SC

Whether you’re moving across the state or within the area, there are a plethora of moving options in and around the city. Downtown Columbia has become a nesting ground for young professionals because of the nightlife in Five Points and The Vista. Like downtown, Cayce and West Columbia have seen a boom in young adults blending with retirees to be close to the action while avoiding the traffic congestion downtown presents.

Irmo already is among the better places to live because of its proximity to the Saluda River Dam, commonly referred to as Lake Murray. But with the development of the Columbiana Mall and other entertainment options, the town continues to be a sellers’ market. Over the years, Lexington has become a destination hotspot for new families because of its top schools, low crime rate and having homes near the lake. With a plethora of parks for biking and jogging and Forest Lake footsteps away, Forest Acres routinely is a top place to live in not just Columbia, but the state.

If you’re wanting to live toward the outskirts of the city, consider Blythewood or Chapin. The latter offers small-town vibes, a low crime rate and is minutes away from Lake Murray. Blythewood also gives you a small-town feel while easily putting you closer toward destinations like Charlotte, North Carolina. No matter your location, the Mobile Attic offers moving and storage solutions to all of the Greater Columbia area. Get a free quote and compare our prices to our competitors. Our Lowest Price Guarantee will ensure you get the best container at the best price.

Things to Do in Columbia, SC

Whether you live in the capital city or are visiting, Columbia South Carolina offers many events to pull you out of the house after you’re done loading or unloading your Mobile Attic. Arguably the most prominent event is the South Carolina State Fair. Normally held in mid-October, the week and a half festival is a treat for all. With thrilling rides, unique games, animal exhibits and mouth watering delights, thousands pack the annual event.

The Governor’s Cup Road Race, which has drawn thousands of the region’s top distance runners to the area since 1973, is one of many long-distance charity events Columbia offers. Residents are given little time to catch their breath before being enticed with the Rosewood crawfish and South Carolina poultry festivals. Both events offer delicious food, charity opportunities, dozens of vendors, arts and crafts and more. Residents and visitors tend to pack out the Township Auditorium because of the variety of concerts and events held there. Sporting fans also can attend a game or event at Williams Brice Stadium or the Colonial Life Arena among other venues.

For residents feeling lucky, be sure to check out the annual St. Pat’s in Five Points, which features a parade and the longest road race in the city. Among notable events are the Columbia International FestivalLove, Peace & Hip-Hop Festival and Lexington County Peach Festival. Make sure to celebrate our country’s independence at the Lake Murray Fireworks Celebration. For rodeo fans, your fireworks come towards the end of the year with the annual Blythewood DOKO Rodeo. To cap each year, Riverbanks Zoo & Garden’s Lights Before Christmas is a must for all residents in the area.

The fun begins once you’re done packing or unloading your Mobile Attic. There may not be a greater joy in the Columbia SC area than visiting the aforementioned Riverbanks Zoo. It is home for more than 2,000 animals and has one of the country’s most beautiful gardens. Continue your stay outdoors and visit the Congaree National Park, a national and historic landmark that offers hiking, canoeing and bird watching among other joys within its 26,276 acres.

Nestled downtown, the South Carolina State Museum is the largest museum in the state. It boosts four floors of ever-changing exhibits, a digital dome planetarium and 4D interactive theater while showing residents and guests of the state our art, science and technology and history. Meanwhile, the South Carolina State House is a National Historic Landmark with several monuments on its grounds depicting its Civil War history along with other monuments honoring other important South Carolinian figures.

More history is only minutes away as the city boasts the World’s Largest Fire Hydrant. Choosing the Mobile Attic for your moving and storage needs gives you more time to see what Columbia has to offer. Spend more time boating, fishing and swimming at Lake Murray, which was the world’s largest man-made reservoir when it was built. Our portable storage units provide less stress on your upcoming renovation or move. By getting a Mobile Attic, you will be one step closer to your next adventure. Don’t forget about our traditional storage and vehicle parking. Store your RV or boat while you’re in-between camping.

Storage for College Students

Led by the University of South Carolina, Columbia offers a plethora of higher education options. Founded in 1801, USC is the flagship institution in the state and is known for The Horseshoe, the U-shaped formation of the college that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The public university has seven satellite campuses across the state and its campus covers over 359 acres across downtown Columbia. The city also offers two of the eight historically black colleges and universities in the state, Allen University and Benedict College. The area boasts one of the oldest women’s colleges in the country in Columbia College, although the school announced expansion to co educational practices and policies in 2020.

The Mobile Attic offers convenient storage solutions for incoming freshman, seasoned seniors and all students in between. If you’re living in a dorm with roommates, extra space can be hard to find. That’s why we offer portable storage units that we can deliver to your college or university. For out-of-town students, consider getting a storage unit so you can avoid hauling all of your belongings with you for winter and summer break. Then, when you return, we can redeliver your property to your institution for convenient unloading.
